Leeds Beckett School of Built Environment and Engineering Launch New MSc in Construction Management

The construction world is witnessing a transformation to become a smart and technologically innovative industry. The challenge is to deploy such innovations when the new industry dynamics is changing traditional roles and practices. This is happening when there are greater pressures from government and clients demanding a significant improvement in the industry performance and the delivery of better quality and value.

In response to this innovation intensive environment Leeds Beckett University has launched a new MSc course in Construction Management. This course provides the knowledge and skills to deliver effective innovation and successfully manage projects in this ever-evolving field.

Course Director for the new MSc, Professor Mohammad Dulaimi states;

“The construction industry is facing a significant challenge to align its culture, management practices and tools, as well as its technology and products, with that of an economy that is increasingly smart and innovative. Such an industry requires leadership that is able to accelerate the pace of innovation. Our course will ensure that future professionals have the skills, knowledge and contacts to be able to lead their future businesses and be part of creating real industry change”

You could already be working as a construction professional and be aiming to enhance your knowledge, or you could be from a technical background, including engineering or architectural technology, and want to build your business acumen and management skills. This course will help you gain the expertise to manage smart construction and innovation, project procurement and the commercial and financial management of construction. It will also enable you to play a key role in shaping the future of a smart and innovative industry.

You will be able to use your experiences in the workplace to enhance your learning and in turn, you will be encouraged to reflect on challenges and problems with your course peers and learn how theory can help you to improve your practice.

This course offers a range of option modules allowing you to study a broad spectrum of construction management topics in areas such as project management, construction law and dispute resolution and smart construction. It also provides the opportunity to focus on one of these areas as part of the degree.

Professor Mohammed Dulaimi has worked in universities in the UK, Singapore and UAE leading the development and delivery of teaching and research in construction management and project management (construction and generic).  He is a chartered construction manager (CIOB) and a visiting professor at the University of Glasgow Caledonian. Mohammed advised and led the research and innovation effort at Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce (UAE). He has provided consultancies and training in project management and construction management in the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore and the UAE. Since joining Leeds Beckett University, he has formed a new research group focused on developing new knowledge that would support the effort of accelerating the pace of innovation to meet the challenges of the “Smart” agenda.

International Women’s Week – Industry Skills Panel Discussion

For International Women’s Week 2019, Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber are delighted to be bringing you a lunchtime discussion on the highly topical issue of future skills for the industry lead by a panel of senior sector professionals.

Topics covered will include (but not limited to) sub-sector specific future requirements, the skills shortage and how companies/organisations can attract, recruit and support new talent, mentoring, retention and diversity, digital and technical skills and new models of education (i.e. degree apprenticeships).

THE FORMAT

Each panel member will talk for around 5-10 minutes on skills from their perspective, followed by an open discussion and Q and A – so come with questions!
