Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber Awards 2021 – What a night!

Share This:

Last Thursday we were finally able to welcome over 370 industry partners, sponsors and supporters to the 2021 Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber Awards, held at New Dock Hall in Leeds. This year’s awards had a mardi gras theme and it was great to see so many people enjoying the carnival atmosphere, vibrant colours and the excellent entertainment provided by our band for the evening, The Sandhouse Stompers.

As always the standard of entries was incredibly high and there were no easy decisions for our judges. It was heartening to see that the challenges of the last eighteen months have not stopped our industry from producing great results and innovating to thrive. It really was another stand out year and we want to congratulate all those companies who made it to the finals. Our winners will now go on to compete at the National Constructing Excellence 2021 awards which will be held in January 2022.

Thanks to your generosity our event also raised over £2300 for this year’s chosen charity, The Lighthouse Club Yorkshire and Humber . This is a charity very close to all our hearts and who have provided much needed support to many in our industry throughout the pandemic. Our thanks to Kirstie Murray from Galliford Try who came and collected the cheque on the charities behalf as well as providing an extremely important & moving presentation on how your donations help them to support our industry.

We would like to thank all our suppliers who work tirelessly to bring our ideas to life; Cherry Venue Dressers, Big Purple Productions, Photogenick, Vibe Music and the team at the Royal Armouries who looked after us so  beautifully on the evening.

Thank you once again to our sponsors, without whose support we simply would not be able to put on an event of this quality and magnitude. Our aim is always to show off what our industry does well, promote positive transformation and set the bar for raising standards; goals we know that our partners share. Thanks in particular to our headline sponsor, Esh Construction, and to Stuart Leslie for his excellent speech on the night where he invited us all to give ourselves a round of applause for keeping going – amen to that!

Finally a massive thank you to you, the industry, for constantly pushing boundaries and delivering transformative work. You ARE our awards!

See you next year!

Tom, Donna and Liz

CONSTRUCTING EXCELLENCE YORKSHIRE AND HUMBER AWARDS ARE BACK!

Organised by the School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing at Leeds Beckett University, the Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber Awards (#CEYH2021) focus attention on some of the most important issues in the construction sector. They recognise the very best companies, collaborations and projects, inspiring others to adopt new and better ways of working that deliver outstanding results.

Join us for our official #ceyh2021 online launch event where we will hear from our panel of esteemed judges what they are looking for in a winning entry.

We will also hear from National Constructing Excellence about the value of entering our awards.

Have you not entered our awards before? Maybe you have but want some extra tips on how to make your entry stand out.

If you are considering entering our awards for the first time or have done in the past but want to improve on your submission style, then our judges will be available to answer all of your key questions providing hints and tips.

COVID 19 – HOW HAVE YOU DEALT WITH 2020’S CHALLENGES?

Covid-19 has created many new challenges for the industry in our region with businesses having to adapt to survive. Our awards have always been about more than a great party, they are about showcasing what our industry does well, driving up standards and ultimately leading positive change in our industry. Off the back of a difficult year, when the sector will look to recovery we think it is more important than ever that businesses make noise about everything they have achieved. Entering our awards can;

  • Raise awareness of the work you do and how it contributes to improving the wider reputation and image of the sector.
  • Demonstrate excellence in your market, showcasing your organisation to key regional and national influencers and helping you to win more work.
  • Show your customers (and your competitors) that you are committed to keeping standards high.
  • Gain external validation for your company values.

WE STILL WANT TO SEE YOUR SELFIES!
As usual we will be asking our online guests to send us their selfies showing us how and where they are watching! Are you going to get dressed up? Going to grab a glass of fizz or maybe you will just make us jealous by showing us the glamorous location you are tuning in from! Selfies to be sent via the hashtag #ceyh2020 – we will show the best ones in the ceremony!
FREE TO ATTEND BUT PLEASE SUPPORT OUR 2020 CHARITY
Attending our online event is FREE however we do politely ask that you make a donation to our #CEYH2020 charity appeal in aid of Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice. We would normally raise around £3000+ at our physical ceremony and we would like to get as close to that total if possible. We are currently only 20% of the way there so anything you can give would be much appreciated by our charity.
Donations can be made via our justgiving page.

Launching our #CEYH2020 Charity Appeal for Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice

Share This:

Every year we use the evening of our Constructing Excellence awards dinner to raise funds for a regional charity. Unfortunately as we are now moving our ceremony online due to COVID19, we have lost the opportunity to collect much needed funds in the room.

We are therefore launching an online campaign with the hope of raising the same, if not more, for this year’s charity, Wheatfields Hospice.

Many charities are suffering at the moment having had their shops closed and traditional fundraising activities curtailed so it is now even more important to support them to keep going. Hospices have had a signficant role to play in the pandemic, providing dignity, care, compassion and bereavement support to families, all while working under some very challenging conditions.

We have our own personal reasons for choosing Wheatfields, please visit our page to hear our story.

To donate, just click on the button above or at the link below. Donations can be made anonymously if you would prefer. Please add gift aid as it doesn’t cost you anything more and will add to the charity’s overall total.

We know that giving to charity is very much a personal decision but if everyone who has ever attended our dinner donated what they would normally do on the evening then we know we could reach our target. Every year we are always blown away by our network’s generosity. We thank you in advance for your support.

Constructing Excellence Yorkshire & Humber Awards 2020 & COVID-19

Share This:

We are sure that many of you are closely monitoring the situation around COVID-19 and are no doubt aware of government restrictions currently in place on gatherings and events.

The safety of our guests is paramount and we have therefore taken the difficult decision to postpone this year’s Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber Awards.

The awards will now take place on the evening of Wednesday 7th October 2020 (put it in the diary folks!). The timings, venue, theme are all the same as before and all current bookings will be transferred over to the new date.

The CEYH team are absolutely committed to delivering these awards which we know are a highlight for many of our network and an opportunity to shine a spotlight on what our industry does well and reward our hard working teams for delivering these often critical build and infrastructure projects. We feel that by October we hope to be through the worst of the impact and will welcome the opportunity to bring our network together for a celebration of the built environment’s contribution.

If for any reason we are unable to deliver a physical ceremony on the 7th, we will still be doing a full judging process and allocating regional winners so please do keep those entries coming in . We have also decided to extend the entry period to give people sufficient time to complete a submission.

The new deadline for entries will be Tuesday 26th May 2020.

Malham Dissertation Fieldtrip – One of a kind ‘writing retreat’ for Leeds Beckett final year Human Geography and Planning Students

Share This:

In January, final year students studying BA Human Geography and BA Human Geography & Planning spent three days in Malham, a small village in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Each year staff accompany students on this fieldtrip and although it is known colloquially as the ‘Dissertation Boot Camp’, students always have a great time. The trip is actually an innovative ‘writing retreat’, the only one of its kind in our university. It is run by Dr Bronwen Edwards, who is a trained academic writing retreat facilitator. Indeed, several of the staff are actively engaged in research on student fieldtrips and writing, and we have drawn on this experience to create a writing retreat that really works for our students as they embark on writing up their dissertation research.

We have a busy programme of activities. Students can choose to attend communal writing sessions, dissertation workshops, and specialist group tutorials on ‘troubleshooting your methodology’ or ‘making a start with your content chapters’ and so on. This year’s exciting addition was a new workshop led by Dr Karen Horwood ‘Serious play lego!’ where students were encouraged to explore where they were at with their dissertations and how to move forward, by making lego models. We are really lucky that several of the staff are experienced walkers and lead country walks for all the students in the spectacular countryside. The rural setting is great for relieving stress, clearing the head, and encouraging the creative flow.
Students have lots of opportunities for support and advice In Malham, but the main aim is to create time and space to write, away from the usual distractions of city life. We help students learn strategies for writing productively when they return to normal student life in Leeds, for example how to break through writer’s block and how to establish a routine of regular writing. So many students find this trip game-changing for their dissertations, building their academic confidence and renewing their enthusiasm for their dissertation topics.

Grant and Funding workshop with the CITB

Share This:

When: Wednesday 13th February 2019 | 08:00 for registration, 08:30 to 09:30 for the seminar.

Where: Room 221, School of Built Environment and Engineering at Leeds Beckett University, Northern Terrace Building, Queen Square Court Road, off Woodhouse Lane, Leeds, LS2 8AG

For their next event, Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and the Humber are delighted to bring you this practical workshop in conjunction with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) looking at the various funding streams available to SMEs in the construction industry and how to access them.

Delivered by Monica Costelloe and John Long, Regional CITB Advisors for Yorkshire, the event is an opportunity to learn about the CITB Training Model, including the Training Directory, Training Register and how to claim grants. Monica and John will also be running through the process for claiming up to £10,000 through the Skills and Training Fund. The skills and training fund currently assesses applications at six points throughout the year and with the next date being on 1st March 2019 there is a real opportunity to secure funds for upskilling your workforce in a matter of weeks.

In addition the workshop will also outline the other ways in which the CITB can support your business as well as answering any questions you may have and giving you advice and guidance on how to apply.

CEYH realises how important SME’s time is so we have deliberately organised this event for an early morning start and are throwing in tea, coffee and breakfast too!

Please note: The funding is available to CITB registered employees with between 1 to 99 employees. Even if you are not yet CITB registered, please do come along and find out how to get registered and the benefits of joining.

Please note the session is due to end at 9:30 although our advisors will be around until 10:00 for any additional questions.
