International Women’s Week 2019: Leeds Beckett University call to “Cite Women” !

Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber is proud to be supporting this event promoting women’s visability in built environment research.

Each year, IWD (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Throughout this week, there will be IWD events across the University and elsewhere in the city including this one organised by the Women and the Built Environment Research Cluster based at the School of Built Environment and Engineering at Leeds Beckett University.

Leeds Beckett School of Built Environment and Engineering Launch New MSc in Construction Management

The construction world is witnessing a transformation to become a smart and technologically innovative industry. The challenge is to deploy such innovations when the new industry dynamics is changing traditional roles and practices. This is happening when there are greater pressures from government and clients demanding a significant improvement in the industry performance and the delivery of better quality and value.

In response to this innovation intensive environment Leeds Beckett University has launched a new MSc course in Construction Management. This course provides the knowledge and skills to deliver effective innovation and successfully manage projects in this ever-evolving field.

Course Director for the new MSc, Professor Mohammad Dulaimi states;

“The construction industry is facing a significant challenge to align its culture, management practices and tools, as well as its technology and products, with that of an economy that is increasingly smart and innovative. Such an industry requires leadership that is able to accelerate the pace of innovation. Our course will ensure that future professionals have the skills, knowledge and contacts to be able to lead their future businesses and be part of creating real industry change”

You could already be working as a construction professional and be aiming to enhance your knowledge, or you could be from a technical background, including engineering or architectural technology, and want to build your business acumen and management skills. This course will help you gain the expertise to manage smart construction and innovation, project procurement and the commercial and financial management of construction. It will also enable you to play a key role in shaping the future of a smart and innovative industry.

You will be able to use your experiences in the workplace to enhance your learning and in turn, you will be encouraged to reflect on challenges and problems with your course peers and learn how theory can help you to improve your practice.

This course offers a range of option modules allowing you to study a broad spectrum of construction management topics in areas such as project management, construction law and dispute resolution and smart construction. It also provides the opportunity to focus on one of these areas as part of the degree.

Professor Mohammed Dulaimi has worked in universities in the UK, Singapore and UAE leading the development and delivery of teaching and research in construction management and project management (construction and generic). He is a chartered construction manager (CIOB) and a visiting professor at the University of Glasgow Caledonian. Mohammed advised and led the research and innovation effort at Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce (UAE). He has provided consultancies and training in project management and construction management in the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore and the UAE. Since joining Leeds Beckett University, he has formed a new research group focused on developing new knowledge that would support the effort of accelerating the pace of innovation to meet the challenges of the “Smart” agenda.

Wood for Good – Timber construction to be showcased in month long Sheffield festival

WoodFest comes to Sheffield throughout February with a focus on health and wellbeing; low carbon; circular economy; building performance; offsite construction; and modular design.

The month-long event will feature wood in design and construction in Sheffield and Yorkshire and the programme includes an exciting line-up of events, seminars, exhibitions and challenges celebrating the versatility and sustainability of building with wood, organised by the UK timber industry’s campaign, Wood for Good.

Christiane Lellig, Wood for Good campaign director, said:

“WoodFest Sheffield promises to offer a fantastic opportunity to bring all those involved with the built environment to explore what can be achieved when we work together. Each event is a chance to learn and share about the use of timber in architecture, particularly around health and wellbeing and offsite construction. It provides a platform to discover what’s happening in the region and to be inspired by timber design.”

PROGRAMME

Small Project / Big Challenge

WoodFest kicks off on 7 February with Small Project / Big Challenge, an evening seminar with sustainability-focused Sheffield architects Paul Testa Architecture and Jon Carr Structural Design along with Sheffield University. They will discuss design and structural challenges with examples including the multi-award-winning Hen House.

48-hour Student Challenge

On 8 and 9 February TRADA will run its annual student challenge at Sheffield University for students of engineering, architecture, architectural technology, quantity surveying and landscape architecture. Judged by high profile engineers, architects and quantity surveyors, multi-disciplinary teams will compete in an intense 48-hour challenge to design an exemplary student accommodation predominantly from timber.

Healthy Buildings

On 21 February, health and wellbeing are top of the agenda at an evening event with Edward Murphy from Ollio Consult, and further experts. The talks and panel discussion are followed by a networking and drinks reception at Kollider.

Modern joinery production – factory tour

A tour of timber door, window and stair manufacturer JELD-WEN’s production facilities will take place at 10am on 28 February. This will offer the chance to see first-hand how timber doors are made in the company’s Sheffield factory, from the timber arriving on-site through to the finished product leaving for distribution. The tour will include a presentation followed by a drinks reception for all attendees.

Sustainable procurement

Managing forests in a sustainable way is vital to protect these important ecosystems, reduce the impact of climate change and to preserve plant and animal species for the future. On 28 February, the PEFC (the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) will deliver a lunchtime CPD to explain how to procure sustainable timber and timber from sustainably managed forests.

More CPDs, site visits and behind-the-scenes tours

Further events include window-specialist Bereco hosting a CPD session on noise and health in the build environment at their Sheffield showroom. There will be a behind-the-scenes tour with Sheffield timber merchant Arnold Laver including a networking lunch, followed by an afternoon CPD. Visitors will have the opportunity to see their production facilities including roof truss manufacturing and its treatment plant.

Striking examples of great architecture and design, such as the Hunt House – featured in The Modern Timber House in the UK book, will offer visits focussed on sustainability and wellbeing within the Sheffield region. Modern timber design can be explored more centrally in an exhibition at The Arts Tower and a further evening event on offsite construction and modular design.

Will is an experienced contentious construction lawyer who specialises in adjudications where he has an excellent track record of

The talk will also cover what process digitisation does for a business and the intelligence that can be derived.

Michael Belcher, Projects Director, TSP Projects Ltd – Mick will share how a change in leadership is required to raise performance of our projects.

Josie Rothera, Leeds Beckett University and Steer Group – Josie will talk about the importance of mentoring in supporting the next generation as they transition from study to the workplace.

Emma Hooper, Digital Information Specialist, Bond Bryan Architects – Insurance Backed Alliancing, such as the Integrated Project Insurance model has the potential to provide a project framework which will allow new ideas to thrive and drive real change in the industry. Emma will give a brief introduction to these collaborative procurement models and how they can improve productivity.

Aaron Penwill, Head of Performance, MSP-Leadership Ltd – Aaron will share a practice of Short Interval Control. The practice involves routines and actions that drive interactions. They will share the human benefits this practice enables and how this connects to project success.

Caroline Key, G4C National Co-Chair – Caroline will present on G4C (Generation for Change) on their new strategy to recruit young professionals to the industry via the #77campaign.

Marc Jordan, Constructing Excellence Director, Balfour Beatty, Construction Services UK – Marc will discuss how a structured Lean Daily Management process can give rise to confidence and collaborative mind-sets. He will draw from experience and share how this concept can be applied to any project and what the many benefits are of doing so.

Rob Wolfe, Managing Director at CHY Consultancy – Rob will present on “CSR is dead?”

Steph Brady, Director, Innovation Fire Engineering – Steph will discuss innovative approaches to creating a culture of work-life balance and the benefits for business.

Professor Mohammed Dulaimi, Leeds Beckett University – Mohammed will talk about the need to accelerate innovation in construction through effective diffusion of new ideas and capability building.

Abstract

While many factors will have contributed to the catastrophe at Grenfell Tower, it is clear that the structure itself behaved in a way that no one could possibly have intended. In this article the authors sample the bewildering and sometimes apparently contradictory directions provided by building regulations, and review how fire safety precautions, while seeming adequate on paper, can be undermined on contact with observed on-site practice.

Industry leaders crowned at Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber Awards 2017

Last Friday saw the culmination of six months of meticulous planning by the Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber team based at Leeds Beckett University to bring you this year’s #CEYH2017 awards and what an incredible night it was! Held at the Queen’s Hotel in central Leeds, we welcomed over 350 of the region’s construction and property professionals to our 10^th Anniversary celebration of the best examples of industry achievement in the last twelve months.

Sponsored by Galliford Try and once again hosted by Danni Hewson, BBC Look North’s business correspondent and industry champion, attendees were treated to networking drinks and a three course summer themed meal, set against our spectacular Yorkshire and Humber AV backdrop of Burnsall Village. We also welcomed Rosie Millard, Chair of Hull City of Culture as our keynote speaker for the evening who gave a captivating presentation on everything Hull has been up to this year so far and a taster of what is still to come. Rosie’s speech definitely went down a storm with our Humber contingent who are rightly proud of their home city! Continuing the Yorkshire theme was our awards playlist featuring only bands from the region; Def Leppard, the Cult and Chumbawumba to name a few; and our Yorkshire coast themed fun photobooth where attendees posed with hats, ice creams and even an inflatable seagull against a picture of Scarborough.

However the real regional stars were the outstanding projects, schemes and organisations who made up the CEYH2017 finalists. Fourteen awards were handed out in total covering the key best practice themes of Constructing Excellence as well as the much coveted and fiercely contested “Selfie of the night”. A special Chair’s award was also handed out posthumously to Dr Andrew Platten, former Associate Dean of Arts, Environment and Technology at Leeds Beckett University who was tragically killed in a cycling incident last July. In honour of Andrew, this year’s chosen charity was Brake and the team were thrilled to raise over £2500 through donations and raffle entries. Many thanks to Keelham Farm Shop, Queen’s Hotel, Snap Recipe Box and East 59th for their generous prize donations.

However the real winner on the evening was the industry itself. The sheer diversity of projects from local regeneration schemes to multi-million facilities demonstrates once again that the Yorkshire and Humber region is at the forefront of pushing boundaries, driving up standards and finding new ways to work collaboratively to achieve mutual cross sector benefit. So all we have left to do is extend a huge THANK YOU to all our sponsors, supporters, entrants, judges and participants. We look forward to seeing you again in 2018!
