Mental Health Awareness in Construction

During Mental Health Awareness week, Constructing Excellence Yorkshire & Humber will be joining forces with Leeds law firm Clarion to deliver this very important event looking at mental health in the construction industry and what companies can and are doing to try and reverse the industry’s shocking statistics in this area (data from the Office of National Statistics found that between 2011 and 2015, of the 13,232 in-work suicides recorded, those within the skilled construction and building trades made up 13.2% – despite construction accounting for little over seven per cent of the UK workforce).

Clare King, Legal Director, Private Client, Clarion

As a trained Mental Health First Aider Clare will share the importance of being aware of mental health issues and the benefit to the workplace. Clare will demonstrate how you can create a more inclusive culture and the initiatives Clarion has put in place.

Joanna Dodd, Senior Associate, Employment, Clarion

Joanna often advises on issues around employees’ mental ill-health and will explain when mental health conditions might be classed as a disability in law and what the employer’s obligations are in this area. Joanna will also discuss the practicalities of managing absence linked to mental health issues, what adjustments might be necessary and appropriate, and how performance/conduct issues (which are or may be linked to an underlying mental health condition) should be dealt with.

Eddie Murphy, Founder of Ollio Consult

Eddie will talk about the need for healthy buildings and the emerging concepts around biophilia in the workplace which incorporate design that promotes mental and physical wellbeing leading to happier, healthier and more focused work teams.

Clever Procurement = Collaboration, Integration and Communication, it’s not rocket science!

On Wednesday 26th April 2017 we hosted another constructing excellence breakfast event at Addleshaw Goddard in Leeds, this time themed around procurement, in particular the roles and responsibilities of the clients, key considerations for those bidding for work and some of the crucial behaviours and processes behind successfully winning tenders.

Always an important (and popular) topic, we welcomed around 30 individuals to the event; principally contractors, subcontractors and architects, however it was also nice to see a number of clients in the room. We believe clients are key to driving improvement in our industry so the more we can provide platforms and encourage them to share experiences and learn from each other for the benefit of the industry, the better!

Our first speaker was Cliff Jones, Head of Construction Procurement Team with the commercial division at the Department of Health (DH) UK. Cliff has been working with DH procurement for over twenty years, including developing and implementing the DH ProCure21+ and now P22 frameworks. Cliff talked principally about setting realistic budgets and programmes from the outset and the importance of full supply chain collaboration and integration. He also emphasized client expectations in terms of issues/problems and risks that arise, i.e. the need for early warning protocols and communication – the DH in particular have a huge issue with correcting defects following handover due to the presence of key end users (clinical staff and patients) and therefore good aftercare is crucial. Cliff’s presentation was full of useful advice and tips for all attendees wherever you are in the build process.

Then onto Philip Collard. Philip is Managing Director of Marketing Works Training and Consultancy Ltd and CEO of myConsole a digital platform that provides bidding analytics, real-time bidding analytics based on potentially widespread and disparate datasets held by a business internally. This was not a sales pitch, Philip was actually here to share his insights into the importance of an organised and unified bidding process and how digitisation, data collection and analysis can support this. He then went on to talk about how companies can then leverage the knowledge and efficiencies this process gives to develop winning bid strategies. As always, the central theme to this presentation was collaboration, integration of process and people and the importance of data and feedback & how we can use digital to facilitate this.

Slightly veering into thinkBIM territory here but one final thought from Philip, how far ahead do we think the industry is in terms of digitisation… one above farming apparently (see slide above). Hold that thought.

2015 Mental Health + The Construction Industry - FINAL

The Construction Industry Council Yorkshire and Humberside is  pleased to announce its first Health Leadership Briefing on Mental Health and The Construction Industry, which will take place on the evening of 9 June 2015 at Leeds Beckett University.

Health and safety is a major priority in the construction industry. The UK has one of the safest construction industries in the world thanks to industry regulations and the greater awareness of the importance of safety by the construction workforce. Having established good safety measures, the industry now needs to focus its attention on the health of its workforce.

This event is the first in a series of Health Leadership Briefings, in which the Construction Industry Council Yorkshire and Humberside will raise awareness of a number of key health issues, starting with mental health and the construction industry.

Mental health is often seen as a taboo subject and it is one of the least talked about issues in the industry; perhaps this is because of its largely male workforce. Research carried out by the HSE in 2007 found that 88% of those working in construction experience some level of work-related stress and 5% describe themselves as suffering from depression or an anxiety related illness.

This briefing will address questions such as:  What do we mean by mental health? What can we do as an industry to promote a mentally healthier workforce? What are an employer’s legal obligations? Guest  speakers include:  Peter Crosland, CECA; Paul Croston, MIND; Natalie Saunders, Genus Law.

Stefanie Stead, Chair of the CIC Yorkshire and Humberside and Architect at Pearce Bottomley Architects had this to say:

“In these economically and environmentally challenging times, following a deep and protracted global downturn, during which construction shed a great many skilled jobs which it is now struggling to replace, we must be mindful of the pressures and strains on the workforce. Mental health is as important as physical health to the well-being of our industry. This event has been organised to raise awareness of mental health issues on the industry’s Health & Safety agenda.”
