G4C (Generation for Change) was established in 1998 as the junior brunch of Constructing Excellence with the aims of harnessing the power of the up and coming construction professionals to drive industry change for the better. Sponsored by Capita, the #G4CAwards, the first of their kind in any of the Constructing Excellence sub-regions, awarded winners across six different categories, each representing the principle areas of work by G4C, culminating in the G4C Award which was won by Mark Lee from EC Harris. Mark said “I am honoured to have been awarded the G4C Award. Ian Buckley, Divisional Operations Director Capita commented: “We are proud to be a sponsor of Constructing Excellence’s Generation for Change – G4C Awards. We take great pride in having some of the best training schemes around for young graduates and will continue to support Constructing Excellence’s superb work.”

We are pleased to announce that we are now taking submissions for the Constructing Excellence in Yorkshire & Humber Awards 2015. Last year’s awards were bigger & better than ever with a record number of submissions and over 350 professionals, representing a broad cross section of the construction industry, coming together at our gala dinner at Sheffield City Hall to celebrate the best that the regional built environment sector has to offer. Two of our regional winners were also victorious at the Constructing Excellence national awards in London last November, showing that construction innovation in the region is right up there with the best the UK has to offer (read more about last year’s winners here).

There are 13 different categories each representing the core themes underpinning the Constructing Excellence agenda including a new category for 2015, BIM Project of the year. Fully inclusive, entries are welcome from any companies, organisations or project teams involved in delivering built environment projects across the region. Lorimer’s Lunch: with Richard Lane, UK BIM Task Group

Share This:

richardlane

On Wednesday 3rd December Constructing Excellence Yorkshire & Humber (CEYH) hosted the Constructing Excellence BIM Task group Q & A session with Richard Lane, Director of Creonova Consulting and Training Development Officer for UK BIM task group. The Q & A was conducted by John Lorimer as part of his “Lorimer’s Lunch”  interview series for CEYH.

If hypothetically, the government removed the 2016 level 2 Mandate tomorrow, would the BIM transformation have already gathered enough momentum to carry on regardless?

The mandate has been incredibly valuable for establishing Government’s leadership around BIM, creating a broad conversation across the industry and pulling everyone together behind a common goal. It doesn’t guarantee success, particularly as it can be human nature at an individual level to resist when told what to do. Assuming that an increasing proportion of the industry now understands BIM and sees value in new ways of working I’m confident that transition would continue.

Have you seen any evidence of BIM implementation resulting in behavioural change/ more collaborative behaviours in the government departments you have worked with yet?

Definitely. From the outset clients are working collaboratively with their Tier 1 suppliers do define the specifics of BIM implementation within specific clients or frameworks. For example, in the development of template Employers Information Requirements documents.

There has also been been a definite increase in government departments working together, sharing knowledge to try and help each other for example Ministry of Justice, Department of Health and Met Police sharing ideas around standards for secure environments. Collaborative behaviours certainly aren’t universal but on the whole there has been a positive increase in government departments working collaboratively.

The public sector are risk adverse, how are they being empowered to do this?

The key for me is leadership. A great example of this is Terry Stocks, Deputy Head of the Estates Department, Ministry of Justice is setting the example by leading the implementation of BIM, two stage tendering & lean delivery through collaborative approaches.

Where do the barriers occur?

Most commonly where organisations are operating under business conditions which were set up prior to the implementation of BIM, where procurement methods, forms of contract and client requirements don’t support collaborative working or encourage trialling of new BIM working practices.

Is the BIM journey driving people to be more collaborative?

It helps. As long as the value is understood and the business environment is created to support it. As we approach the end of the 4 year BIM journey we are analysing progress made against the 10 tests of the hypothesis originally defined in the BIS BIM Strategy. (Details on government website here http://www.bimtaskgroup.org/bim-faqs/ – point 3) Key elements of this are that BIM has to be Understandable (something we continue to work on) and Valuable.

Are we recording that anywhere?

We are internally reviewing departmental implementation against the 10 tests, but it is unclear at this time if it would be shared publically in that form or used to inform other outputs such as case studies.

Questions from the floor

Benedict Wallbank, SmartBIM – What percentage of Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Defence tenders are now going out with EIRs (Employer Information Requirements)?

Those departments have templates for EIRs which we are starting to roll out on newly tendered projects now. We still have some work to do to establish the detailed requirements related to the information exchanges and the Digital Plan of Work (http://www.thenbs.com/bimtoolkit/)

should help with this. We must remember that we are still in a transition period and as we integrate BIM as “business as usual” EIRs will develop & evolve.

Howard Jeffrey, Skanska – How are you addressing the management of expectations during the transition period? Also what does collaboration actually mean?

When I first joined the BIM Task Group I think we relied too much on the mandate in our engagement with clients. Since then we’ve evolved our approach to where the conversations are much more client led and value driven. Clarity is key, it’s a lot easier to collaborate if everybody is clear on what is expected of each project participant.

David Jellings, Solibri UK – In your unique position what are the common threads and avoid the word “collaboration”

Compliance is key!  Compliance with the 2016 mandate is being measured centrally within Government. Departments are defining the details of their implementation but with common criteria such as the transacting of data at agreed points in the process, the delivery of an EIR document.  The journey is different but the destination is the same.  We are all working to get value from the digital data.

2014 has been a successful year for CEYH – more to come in 2015 !!

Share This:

Yesterday over 20 guests and CE members came together to hear about the CEYH centres activities over the last year and to be invited to get involved in our CEYH 2015 awards on July 17th 2015 at York Railway Museum .

The  morning was a bit of a treat and an opportunity to launch our forthcoming awards , invite judges and sponsors to be involved and also let members know about  a couple of funding opportunities for organisations in the YH region .

Before jumping into the awards I took  a moment to celebrate and share some of the successes CEYH has achieved since starting back in September 2013 .

20141126_083642

1. Collaboration with the CE club

As one of Constructing Excellence’s nine regional partners we have forged excellent working relationships with our CE club to deliver a consistently well attended programme of monthly breakfast events here in Leeds , Sheffield and Hull – striving to promote work done through our CE national member task groups on changes to CDM regulations , new models of procurement , passiv haus and green building excellence, BIM and many other topics . All events have received good to excellent ratings in feedback showing we are doing something right and meeting the needs of construction organisations big and small within the region .

2. Exciting Membership offer

Aside from our programme of events we have worked with the club to develop a membership offering which is appetising and spiralling offering a wide range of activities to get involved in at a modest rate including attendance at our sister networks thinkBIM and green vision free of charge .

3. New Regional Board

We continue to develop our regional centre and in January will commence our CEYH board meetings which will drive and shape our agenda over the year to come . More of this to be announced in the New Year !….

4. Engaging the Young Professionals

Not only have we developed and strengthened our relationship with our club and national members but we have also worked closely with our young professionals group G4C supporting them with events marketing and most recently their G4C awards which are now open for submissions and will take place on Feb 13 in Sheffield . The winners of the G4C awards will form the short list for our young achiever award at the regional awards next year .

5. Celebrating Success at the CEYH Awards

Our regional CE awards have gone from strength to strength with our most recent awards attracting Peter Hansford, Chief Construction advisor to the government , as the keynote speaker and over 350 construction sector professionals coming together to celebrate success across the region. Further to this  Yorkshire and Humber took  home two awards for Innovation and Client of the year at the national CE awards in London .(see great blog write up by our very own @lizschofieldmay here )

Our relevance and effective dissemination of national activity at regional level is excellent and we are continually striving to improve our offering to members developing publications such as our winners brochure which is produced annually from our awards ceremony .

6. Communicating our message

Liz Schofield  is working hard to develop our blog and communication channels so that our members and winners get great publicity for all of their work and now have a following of over 1000 on our twitter account and articles from our events being published on the national website and other leading sites such as BIM crunch and UKGBC pinpoint .. All achievements we  are very proud of .

7. Coordination and collaboration

Our new project coordinator Donna organises and liaises with our guests , speakers and members and who above all keeps me on my toes and ensures we are reaching out to new partners and collaborating across the disciplines and sector .

8. Striving for excellence

We strive for cross disciplinary excellence in construction  advocating collaborative working and digital construction and aim to provide the same excellence for our members with a regular , enjoyable and informative home / network that is inclusive and provides a platform for open knowledge exchange and networking .

We have come a long way in just over a year and look forward to what we may be able to achieve in 2015 with an established supportive board who will drive and direct the centre to provide events and networking and sharing of lessons learnt in projects and from task groups in an open way

If you would like to be more actively involved in the region by becoming a member please do call our team on 0113 8127601. As members you get full access to all of our events and opportunities to promote your organisation and projects via our blogs and social media platforms . We are always looking for case studies and thought pieces by members to share on our national platform and our regional blog – you can write for us , be interviewed by us for a tweet chat or speak at one of our events … There are no barriers to entry – we just want to join up the region and collaborate and form long standing relationships which bring benefits to us all .

This success is down to a few peeps :

John LORIMER – for being a supporter of what we do and believing that we could make a success of a now very strong regional centre

Tom Oulton for tweeting furiously – speaking at events and acting as a CE and BIM ambassador in his role as CIC regional BIM champion

Steph and Will at Addelshaws for supporting and hosting our excellence breakfasts on a monthly basis

Duncan Reed for leading our BIM implementation training and consultancy with construction smes across the uk and for his continued support and dedication to thinkBIM

Thanks to Andrew Arundel for  supporting the development and growth of the regional centre .

Last but not least to the regional professional bodies who continue to work closely with us to ensure we avoid clashes and collaborate where possible – thanks to Mark Conner and Simon Owen at CIBSE , Mark Wilson at CIAT and Fiona Evans at CIOB for their active support .
