Don Ward to present at #CEYH2015 breakfast seminar on 29th April

Addleshaw Goddard, Leeds, 08:00 to 9:30

On 29th April we will be hosting a morning seminar themed around Key Performance Indicators (KPI) & are pleased to be welcoming back Constructing Excellence (CE) CEO, Don Ward to talk about CE’s agenda in this area & why they are important. Constructing Excellence publishes an annual report on KPIs each year with support from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills   which maps trends & sets benchmarks across the construction sector. CE members can also track their projects and organisations against these KPIs at KPIzone.com. The latest report, published in late 2014, suggested that challenging economic conditions continue to undermine industry efforts to deliver improved services to clients.

In his presentation, Don will give a summary of the Constructing Excellence vision, which supports the government’s industrial strategy Construction 2025 and seeks to deliver on ambitious targets for sector improvement, together with and an introduction to the value of benchmarking and KPIs.

We are also delighted to have David Widdowson , Head of Asset Programme Management & Finance at Yorkshire Water speaking for us for the first time. David will talk about the background to the Water Benchmarking Club, a project in partnership with CE & Salford University, and an overview of the system.  He will also cover the KPI measures used & rationale plus the data & benefits.

Food for thought at our CEYH2015 Equality and Diversity breakfast

Share This:

We were delighted to hold our highly enjoyable & thought-provoking Equality and Diversity seminar last week; which started by introducing the CITB Be Fair framework to the assembled audience. A straw poll conducted by Lucy Dixon, Director of See Things, at the beginning of her presentation indicated that only 30% of the audience were aware of framework, surprising considering it’s aim to assist businesses to address & adhere to the Equality Act 2010. Lucy went on to describe the framework, who can get involved and more importantly why they should.

Following up from our women in the workplace blog post several weeks ago by Heather Jackson (who has since been on BBC Breakfast – go Heather!) , we also welcomed back Janet Beckett who delivered a frank and engaging presentation (with a truly spectacular title I might add), “women are construction’s most underused resource”. Janet outlined her experiences of working in a traditionally male-orientated industry and what the percieved barriers are to women entering the profession, and how we overcome them.  Janet, in her own words “enjoys stirring up debate on Twitter” so give her a follow @carbonsaveruk and take her up on that!

Our storify which summarises the key points from the two presentations has been shared below. As with many Equality and Diversity events, there is never enough time to cover all the issues that need to be discussed but we do hope our seminar has given those attending (& following  from afar!) food for thought.

Save the Date!
Our next Constructing Excellence event will be KPI Excellence on 29th April and will include a presentation from CE Chief Executive Officer, Don Ward. This will be a great opportunity to learn about Constructing Excellence’s vision and how it supports delivery of the Construction 2025 strategy. Don will also talk about the value of Benchmarking & KPIs. Book here

Top 8 tips for writing an successful #ceyhawards submission

Share This:

SIG
.

It’s that time of year where construction businesses across our region will be starting to put together their entries for this year’s Constructing Excellence in Yorkshire & Humber Awards. What better time then to put together our top tips for completing a winning submission.

.
1. Know your timescales

Make sure you have our key dates in your diary and give yourself plenty of time to complete your submissions. The closing date for entries this year is Friday 15th May 2015 with the shortlist being announced at the beginning of June.

2. Read the entry guidelines document & criteria carefully & provide all requested information

Read through the category criteria and section questions carefully so that you are clear on what the judges are looking for in each category. Ensure that you provide the key data requested, Judges will be looking for hard facts & figures which clearly support your claims.

3. Support your case with good images

Photographic images are an important part of your entry. We do not just want photos of gleaming finished buildings; we want to see before/after, work in progress, people and all aspects of the project. Please try to ensure that these images are of a good quality, high resolution as they will be used in event brochure & the powerpoint on the evening. Images must be in jpeg format.

4. Keep it simple & avoid jargon

Keep the message simple and clear, more words doesn’t necessarily mean a better submission. Avoid unnecessary acronyms and technical terms which may not be understood by everyone.

5. Get Testimonials

Getting testimonials from companies, project teams, individuals you have worked with strengthens your application & demonstrates great teamwork.

6. Involve your team

The best entries involve collaboration & input between all parties who have worked on the project.

7. Don’t recycle

Multiple submissions are actively encouraged but please ensure that

each entry is tailoured to the requirements of the category you are going for.

8. And finally….

North West & Yorkshire & Humber BIM Hubs – Introducing the BIM Toolkit event

The toolkit is a free and easy to use web portal which guides users through the construction process. It provides step-by-step support to define, manage and validate responsibility for information development and delivery at each stage of the asset lifecycle.

It organises information through a pan-industry classification system, with well-defined levels of graphical detail and information for each stage, as well as a comprehensive set of product information templates.

It is fundamental to the successful delivery of projects to BIM Level 2 by 2016. It will save time, reduce risk and help users follow best practice to deliver better client outcomes during design, construction and operational phases.

The North West and Yorkshire & Humber BIM Hubs have got together with NBS – which is leading the development team – to offer an early view of the toolkit and an opportunity to provide feedback. John McKechnie, BIM Toolkit Project Manager, will take us through the various elements of the toolkit and explain how it works before inviting comments and questions from the audience.

As a pan-industry tool, this event is suitable for professionals of all disciplines. Places are limited so book early.

18th March 2015

12pm to 4pm

The Carriageworks, The Electric Press, Millennium Square, Leeds LS2 3AD

On behalf of Youthbuild UK, I would like to invite you and/or your colleagues to our Building Pathways event, which examines how to unleash the potential of disengaged, disaffected young people to fill the construction industry skills gap.

The issues we are facing are: –

  • There is, currently, a 200,000 shortfall in the construction workforce
  • There are, as reported by HMG on 21st August 2014, 955,000 young people not in education, employment or training (NEETS) in England

The potential solution is to: –

  • Give / create opportunities for disaffected / disadvantaged young people to train for and / or become employed in the construction industry

Does it work?

  • Hear from young people who have transformed their lives by entering the construction industry
  • Hear from public, private and third sector organisations that work with and / or create opportunities for disaffected / disadvantaged young people

Could you help to create the “workforce of the future”?

Women in the Workplace

Guest post by Heather Jackson, Chair and Founder of An Inspirational Journey

When asked to write about women in the workplace, my first thought was, I wonder how long it might be before the question is not about women in the work place but talent in the workplace.

Companies that are gender balanced throughout are more likely to treble company performance, quadruple innovative thinking and half-staff turnover intention. This is a fact proved time and time again by numerous business reports.

Women in the workplace in corporate UK stands at around 52% of the working population , with some 60% of graduates entering the corporate pipeline and just 6% reaching the executive.

A considerable amount of publicity and attention has been given to the lack of women at the top of corporate Britain.

The fact is in today’s market, the problem is not at the top, it’s in the middle. We still find too many women exiting companies, or allowing their career progression to stagnate once they reach middle management.

We need to start to implement sustainable solutions that help support women to continue and progress their careers. We need to help men to understand the reasoning behind why women allow their career progression to stagnate. We need to support female talent to succeed. Until this is successfully achieved the question around how long before we are asked to talk about “Talent” rather than Women” in the workplace is still a few years away.
